Teachers’ dress code will never be changed: Education Minister

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha today said the current dress code of teachers will not be changed under any circumstances.

Current dress code for male teachers is trousers and shirts while for female teachers is Sari or Osari.

Ceylon Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin recently sent a letter to the Education Minister requesting to allow female teachers to wear appropriate and modest attire for work given the current situation of the country.

However, Buddhist monks vehemently objected to change the dress code of female teachers saying Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country and has a 2600 years of a history.
