Ahimsa Wickrematunge Calls for Impeachment of AG Over Lasantha Murder Case

Ahimsa Wickrematunge, daughter of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, has demanded the impeachment of Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, accusing him of gross abuse of power and neglect of duty in handling her father’s assassination case.

In a letter to Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Wickrematunge strongly criticised Ranasinghe’s decision to discharge three suspects, calling it a deliberate move that undermines justice. She argued that this was not an “innocent mistake” but reflected a culture of “callousness and complacency” within the Attorney General’s Department.

The letter highlights the findings of a CID investigation from 2015 to 2019, which revealed evidence of key police officers obstructing justice by tampering with case material. However, Wickrematunge claims Ranasinghe ignored this evidence and relied on selective, outdated information to drop charges against key suspects, including former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prasanna Nanayakkara.

She further alleged that the Attorney General’s decision aligns with past political efforts to derail investigations into high-profile crimes. Calling for impeachment proceedings in Parliament, she stated that Ranasinghe is “no longer fit to serve as Attorney General.”

The letter has also been copied to the Minister of Justice and the Leader of the Opposition.
