SJB, UNP Agree to Establish Power in LG Bodies with Opposition Support
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the United National Party (UNP) have reached a preliminary agreement to form power in local government bodies where the opposition holds a majority.
The decision was made during a special meeting held this morning (19) between representatives of both parties at the Office of the Opposition Leader. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa was also present.
A joint statement issued by SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara and UNP General Secretary Thalatha Atukorale noted that both parties discussed key policy matters related to establishing control in local councils following the 2025 Local Government Elections.
The two factions have agreed to collaborate with other opposition parties to form administrations in several local government bodies.
