Lifting Glyphosate ban: Minister and Pesticides Registrar clash

Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage cannot remove him from the post or take disciplinary actions against him as he revoked ban of several chemical pesticides following obtaining approval from the Legal Draftsman, Registrar of Pesticides Dr. J.A. Sumith says.

He made this remark following the Ministers statement that disciplinary action will be taken against him for violating the government’s green economy policy.

The Registrar issued a Gazette Extraordinary yesterday (22) revoking the order imposed via a gazette in December 2014.

The said gazette in 2014 prohibited the use and sale of five chemical pesticides, Glyphosate, Propanil, Carbaryl, Cholopyrifos and Carbofuran.
