LG Polls in April?

The Election Commission has ruled out the possibility of holding Local Government Election 2023 before Sinhala – Hindu New Year, Daily Mirror reported.

EC Chairman Nimal Punchihewa has told Daily Mirror that the date for the polls remain in the hands of the Treasury.

Punchihewa has said that even if the treasury releases funds for the election immediately based on Friday’s Supreme Court ruling the election has to be held between 5 – 7 weeks from the day of declaration of the polls. Hence, the LG polls have to be held in the second half of April, 2023.

Meanwhile, all the Opposition parties in Parliament have handed over a letter to the EC requesting to hold the election on 19 March.

A discussion with the EC and the Opposition parties is scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The EC said last week that a fresh date to hold the election will be announced this week.
