Forex crisis: Gvt assures of no power cuts
Even amidst a severe forex crisis, Sri Lanka will not face to power cuts, Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said in Parliament today (29).
Responding to a question of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Minister said since 55 % of electricity is generated from hydro power, demand for furnace oil has been reduced at the moment.
Wickeremesinghe claimed tha the country soon would have to face power cuts because there are no foreign currency to buy coal and fuel as a result of forex crisis.
Gammanpila who assured that there will be no power cuts said that there is a stock of 70,000 metric tons left in storages and this could be utilized in the event of a drought.
“Priority has been given to import fuel and pharmaceuticals and other health related products,” he said.
