Breaking: Ganansara Thera Sentenced to 9 Months for Insulting Islam

Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), has been sentenced to nine months in prison by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court for making insulting remarks about Islam.

In addition to the prison sentence, Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500.

The case originated from a statement made by Gnanasara Thera on 16 July 2016 during a press conference in Kirulapone. The police filed charges against him under Section 291 of the Penal Code, accusing him of promoting religious disharmony.
