MP Chamara Sampath Released on Bail

Badulla District Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath Dassanayake was released on bail today by the Badulla Magistrate’s Court, following his recent arrest over serious corruption allegations linked to his tenure as Chief Minister of the Uva Provincial Council.

The court approved bail with two sureties of Rs. 1 million each, following the consideration of the bail application.

Dassanayake was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on March 27, after recording a statement regarding three separate corruption charges linked to his previous positions.

One of the charges involves the misappropriation of Rs. 1 million from a fixed deposit belonging to the Uva Provincial Council, while another charge relates to the withdrawal of six fixed deposit accounts from a state bank, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 23 million to the government.

The charges, which fall under the Public Property Act, are being pursued by CIABOC.
