Warrent issued on Weerawansa
In relation to a case filed by the Cinnamon Garden police, the Colombo Chief Magistrate has issued an arrest warrant for Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa due to his absence from the Court proceedings.
Wimal Weerawansa, the leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF), along with five others, is accused of leading a protest in 2016 that resulted in the blocking of major roads at Bauddhaloka Mawatha. This action caused disruptions to the public and the normal flow of traffic.
During the hearing before Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis, Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa failed to appear. The next magisterial inquiry has been scheduled for September 11.
The protest march organized by the NFF on February 6, 2016, was staged against the visit of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
