Ministry Promises Action Over Sabaragamuwa Uni Student’s Death Linked to Ragging

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education has vowed to take strict legal action against anyone found responsible for the recent death of a Sabaragamuwa University student, if investigations confirm it was due to ragging.

The 23-year-old second-year Engineering Technology student reportedly died by suicide at his home in Gampola on April 29, shortly after attending the university’s Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival. Family members and friends allege he was subjected to severe humiliation during the event.

In response, the Ministry has appointed a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident. It stated that, based on the inquiry’s findings, the University Administration and the University Grants Commission (UGC) will take appropriate measures.

The Ministry also acknowledged growing public concern over ragging-related abuse in universities and reiterated its commitment to holding perpetrators fully accountable under the law.
